One weekend I made a decision.

And that decision was to run away and join the circus…also known as Greece…for eight months…leaving my job, my cat and my house…yikes!

This year has been a BIG year for change. I need some space to process things and gain some perspective. And even start a new blog adventure!

In the process of going after this even BIGGER goal, I’m going to have to cut myself a bit of slack and let some of my 29 things slide to 2014.

I have completed 15! I’m over halfway through the list!

I think I can finish the flower challenge!

But I may have to let 13 or so things slide into next year.

Wildendurance 2013 - tick!

Where do I start? What an epic weekend. Team Happening made it happen. Only one of us made it to the finish line (go James!!) but we all gave the challenge everything we had (I managed 90km before my knee gave out). Looking back I can safely say that it was the stupidest physical challenge I have ever put myself through, the toll it took on my body, mind and spirit was incredible…BUT, I survived, and as my brother pointed out to me the next day - pushing beyond our limits is how we get stronger, how we learn more about ourselves. I now have an extra ‘grit’ of strength that some day I may need to call upon - and that is what makes me feel positive about having given this challenge a go.

I just want to say - sleep deprivation is a serious thing. Nobody ever wants to see me that sleep deprived again. Never. Ever. Again.

My support crew were AMAZING! And spending time with my Dad was the best.

Old Skool Kitchen Skillz revisited - How to make macaroons!

Ok, if I’m going to be honest here, I will never do this again, but for educational purposes and as an excuse to hang out with good people on a Sunday, I learned how to make macaroons. They look pretty good don’t they?!?

Easter weekend. Powered by coffee, I united with my team to trial the first leg of our crazy 100 km walking challenge. We started at 1:30pm, covered 33km of bush track, saw a red belly black snake (good omen), climbed a 14 metre cliff, walked into the dark, to finish at 10:30pm. Not a bad effort.

The difference one weekend makes…one weekend with a bit of extra time to think…a bit of extra time to let your thoughts wander…and suddenly you’re wondering whether you want to take this life in a COMPLETELY different direction…No decisions have been made yet, but it was a great weekend.

Here’s to more coffees at Purple Moose Cafe, more visits to local markets, more needles and netflix sessions (yes the jumper project has been started!) and more long walks in the bush.

Ok – I’ve been celebrating my mini victories, but let’s get down to what still has to get done before July 5th 2013. I can divide the remaining list into three categories.

1.      Plan is set, I’ve got this covered, and I’m not worried about getting this done.

2.      Plan is vague, I think I’ll pull it off, but the vision is a little hazy right now.

3.      Plan is non-existent, $#!*, what am I going to do?!?!?

So the plan is set for:

·         Big run – I’m turning it into a big walk, May 4th and 5th, and for anyone who thinks this is a cop out, you can come and walk 100km with me and see how easy it is…I’m scared witless about this challenge.

·         Triple state road trip – Road trip is booked in. We leave in May after the big walk.

·         Visit the pink lakes – Road trip is booked in. We leave in May after the big walk.

·         Drink a beer in Silverton – Road trip is booked in. We leave in May after the big walk.

·         Glamping – Road trip is booked in. We leave in May after the big walk. Yes I’m squeezing this road trip for everything it’s got.

·         Always have fresh flowers in the house – going strong.

·         Read a small novel (100-200 pages) a month – started a book club, this should keep me on track to finish 5 more books before July.

·         Read a book by a philosopher and discuss it with Claire – I’ve bought the book, I think I’ll read it while on leave in May.

The plan is vague for:

·         Knit a jumper – I am going to Spotlight this weekend and having a “Needles and Netflix Night” with my friend Lisa to get me started. The plan is vague because thinking about fitting in “knitting time” makes me laugh…maybe while we’re “one the road”??

·         Try 10 different styles of dance at Dance Central – this isn’t so hard, I just need to go to dance class! I can do this.

·         Make a memory quilt, including every experience listed above – Trinah works miracles when she puts her mind to it, I’m sure we can pull this off together in June.

No plan! WTF?!?!

·         (Mini) triathlon – gulp.

·         Learn how to surf – summer is over…beach is looking less attractive…gulp.

·         Flyer bomb a town – creativity is lacking…I don’t know…

·         Learn to have a conversation in a new language – ha ha ha ha…I’m having trouble speaking English…need to figure out how I’m going to tackle this.

·         Stay in a haunted house/explore haunted location – Need to talk to James (the challenger) about this…

I have now finished watching 10 action movies - one more thing is DONE!

I finished with Commando. I cannot accurately describe just how ridiculous this movie is. Good thing most of you have probably seen it already, because it’s one of those “you gotta see it to believe it” type deals.

Arnie doesn’t get bigger, he is RIDICULOUSLY muscle bound. The plot could not be weaker or have more holes. The acting…well there was no acting, it was delivering of corny one liners and blowing things up. Luckily, it did make me laugh…a lot…so it was worth it for laughs.

And now I’m free of stupid action movie viewing, hooray!

Quick Update:

  • My wonderful hibiscus plant is keeping me in the fresh flower game.
  • My favourite boys, as pictured above, keeping me company and knocking off two more action movies. Rambo - First Blood Part II (stupid name for a movie) and Die Hard. Both capturing the stars, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, in their youthful heydays. I only have to watch one more action movie to complete this THING!
  • And, I’ve started booking accommodation for my road trip - it’s all coming together!

I’m ON THE ROAD again!

To help motivate me to read more I started a book club…more of a book posse…because we’re cooler than a club. First book is On The Road by Jack Kerouac (Good choice Tam!) and a copy was just hand delivered to my desk (Thanks Lisa!).

But it’s not just books, I’m pulling my socks up and marching on with life while also looking for more ways to be quiet and restful to fully recover from the BFG (previously the Big Friendly Giant, now acronym for the Big Fever Glandular). Luckily I can squeeze a few of my 29 things into quieter activities, like knitting!

Yes, I’m finally going to tackle the knitting mission, again with Lisa’s help, a pattern has been found which only requires one large knitted rectangle and somehow that rectangle gets sewed together and turned into a jumper! Hey presto - Can’t get simpler than that. It’s called the Paris Sweater, cest magnifique!

Taking time out of fitness instructing has given me more chances for me-time-exercise. Crossfitting when I have energy, and just walking when the energy is low. But in true Sophie style, I can’t just walk without a purpose…and whoops I fell over and signed up to undertake a 100km walking challenge on the first week of May - WildEndurance - google it - then look up my name and sponsor me - yeah thanks!

The WildEndurance weekend will kick off my two week road trip, taking me from Sydney to the Blue Mountains (with 100km stroll thrown in for good measure), then off to Dubbo (zoo!), then Cobar to Broken Hill (and grab a beer in Silvertown, the next town over), then down to Renmark (South Australia), round to the Pink Lakes (glamping it up with my Dad’s Prado!) and then hauling back up through South Central NSW to get back to Sydney. Did you spot the three things I can cross off my list in that mix?!?

So about that idea to “slow down”….does anybody have any advice? I’m bad at this…
